Barbiturates behave in the same way to benzodiazepines. Pentobarbital binds to an allosteric web-site to the GABAA receptor and potentiates the results in the endogenous ligand, gamma-aminobutyric acid. When barbiturates bind for the GABAA receptor, it causes the ion pore to open for prolonged periods of time, leading to an increase of intracellula
